What 4K actually requires
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Internet speed | 40 Mbps+ sustained to the device |
| Connection type | Ethernet, or strong 5GHz Wi-Fi |
| Streaming device | 4K-capable: Firestick 4K, Shield, Apple TV 4K, MAG 420+ |
| Television | 4K panel with HDMI 2.0 or better |
| HDMI cable | High Speed / Premium certified |
| Source feed | Genuinely broadcast in 4K |
That final row is the one nobody mentions in marketing copy, and it is the one that determines what you actually see. No provider can deliver 4K for a channel that is not produced in 4K. What arrives from the broadcaster is the ceiling.
What is genuinely available in 4K
The realistic picture:
- Selected premium sports events — major football matches, marquee fixtures, some motorsport.
- Dedicated UHD demonstration and nature channels.
- A growing portion of VOD film and series libraries.
- Some flagship broadcaster feeds in specific countries.
- Most news channels — produced in HD, no 4K feed exists.
- The majority of general entertainment channels.
- Regional and local stations.
- Older films and series — no 4K master exists to stream.
So a realistic expectation is that a meaningful set of premium sport and VOD content is available in true 4K, and the bulk of everyday linear channels is HD. Any provider claiming its entire lineup is 4K is describing something that does not exist anywhere in broadcasting.
Be sceptical of channels labelled "4K" that are simply upscaled 1080p. Upscaling adds pixels, not detail. A true 4K feed shows visibly finer texture on grass, crowds and fabric; an upscale just looks softer and smoother.
Bandwidth, realistically
| Quality | Typical bitrate | Recommended line speed |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 1 – 2 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| HD 720p | 3 – 5 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| Full HD 1080p | 5 – 8 Mbps | 25 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 15 – 25 Mbps | 40 Mbps+ |
The recommended figures are higher than the bitrates because your connection is shared, variable, and other devices are using it. A 4K stream at 20 Mbps on a 25 Mbps line will buffer the moment anything else happens on the network.
Test speed on the streaming device itself, not on a phone standing next to the router. The number that matters is throughput at the TV, which is frequently half what the router reports.
Hardware traps that quietly cost you 4K
- The HDMI port. Not every port on a TV is full bandwidth. Check which are HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 — often only one or two are.
- HDMI Deep Colour / Enhanced Format. Many TVs ship with this disabled per port, silently capping you at 4K 30Hz or 8-bit colour. Enable it in input settings.
- The cable. An old cable from a drawer may not carry 4K 60Hz. Use a Premium High Speed certified cable.
- Output settings. Set the device to output 4K 60Hz explicitly rather than trusting auto-detection.
- Soundbars and receivers. An older device in the HDMI chain can downgrade the whole path. Try connecting directly to the TV to test.
This sequence is worth going through before concluding that a provider is not delivering 4K. In support, a surprising share of "4K is not working" reports resolve at step two.
Is 4K worth prioritising?
Be honest about your viewing distance and screen size. On a 55-inch television at three metres, the visible difference between good 1080p and 4K is modest. On a 75-inch set at two metres, it is obvious.
Stability matters more than resolution for most people. A rock-solid 1080p stream of a match is a better experience than a 4K stream that stutters every time the crowd moves. If your connection is marginal, choosing the HD feed deliberately is the smarter setting.
Frequently asked questions
What internet speed do I need for 4K IPTV?
Around 40 Mbps or more sustained to the streaming device. A 4K stream itself uses roughly 15-25 Mbps, but you need headroom for network variability and other devices, so a 25 Mbps line is not enough in practice.
Are all IPTV channels available in 4K?
No, and they cannot be. A channel can only be delivered in 4K if the broadcaster produces it in 4K, and most linear television — including nearly all news and general entertainment — is still made in HD. Expect 4K on selected premium sport and a growing share of VOD.
How can I tell if a channel is really 4K or just upscaled?
Look at fine texture: grass, crowd detail, fabric. True 4K shows visibly sharper detail in those areas, while upscaled 1080p looks smoother and softer without extra detail. Some players also display the actual stream resolution in an info overlay.
Why is my 4K IPTV stream only showing 30Hz?
Usually the TV's HDMI port settings. Enable Deep Colour, HDMI UHD Colour or Enhanced Format for that specific input, confirm the port is HDMI 2.0 or better, and use a Premium High Speed certified cable.
Do I pay extra for 4K IPTV?
You should not. Every one of our plans includes 4K-ready streams where the source provides them, with no separate UHD tier or surcharge. Be cautious of providers selling 4K as a paid add-on.
