VLC — the fastest test
VLC is free, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and will open an IPTV playlist immediately. It has no programme guide and no channel management, so it is not a daily driver — but for confirming that a new subscription actually works, nothing is quicker.
- Install VLC from the official videolan.org site.
- Open Media → Open Network Stream (Ctrl+N, or Cmd+N on Mac).
- Paste the M3U URL from your welcome email.
- Press Play. The playlist loads into VLC's playlist pane.
- Double-click any channel to start it.
This is our standard first suggestion in support tickets. If a channel plays in VLC on your computer but not on your TV device, the problem is the device or the app, not the subscription — which narrows things down enormously.
Kodi — a full TV interface
Kodi turns a computer into a proper living-room TV experience with a channel list, programme guide and recording. It takes about ten minutes to configure.
- Install Kodi from kodi.tv.
- Go to Add-ons → My add-ons → PVR clients → PVR IPTV Simple Client and enable it.
- Open its configuration and set Location to Remote Path (Internet address).
- Paste your M3U URL into the playlist field.
- Under the EPG tab, paste your EPG URL.
- Restart Kodi. A TV section appears with your channels and guide.
Install Kodi only from kodi.tv, and avoid pre-configured "builds" distributed elsewhere. Those bundles frequently include add-ons that scrape illegal sources, and they can break your installation in ways that are tedious to unpick.

Getting it onto the TV
Three practical routes, in order of quality:
- HDMI cable. Unglamorous and flawless. The computer becomes the source, full resolution, no encoding step.
- Chromecast from a browser. Cast a Chrome tab to a Chromecast. Convenient but re-encodes, so quality drops and latency rises.
- DLNA / AirPlay. Works from some players to compatible TVs, with mixed reliability.
For anything you actually care about watching, HDMI. For a spontaneous decision to put a match on the big screen, casting is fine.
Why the desktop is the best diagnostic tool
- You can paste credentials instead of typing them with a remote — eliminating typo errors entirely.
- Error messages are visible and readable rather than a generic on-screen code.
- You can run a speed test in another tab at the same moment a stream is struggling.
- You can try three different players in five minutes.
- You can confirm whether a specific channel is present without scrolling on a TV.
When someone reports that a channel is missing, the fastest resolution path is nearly always: open VLC on a laptop, paste the M3U, check. It takes under a minute and removes every device variable.
Performance notes
- Use ethernet on a desktop; laptops on 5GHz Wi-Fi are usually fine.
- Enable hardware acceleration in VLC (Tools → Preferences → Input/Codecs) for 4K streams.
- Close other bandwidth-heavy applications — cloud sync clients are a common culprit.
- On older laptops, 4K streams may stutter due to CPU limits rather than bandwidth. Try an HD feed to confirm.
Frequently asked questions
How do I watch IPTV on my PC?
The quickest way is VLC: open Media, then Open Network Stream, paste your M3U URL and press play. For a full TV interface with a programme guide, install Kodi and configure the PVR IPTV Simple Client with your M3U and EPG URLs.
Can I use VLC for IPTV?
Yes. VLC opens an M3U playlist directly and plays any channel in it. It has no programme guide or channel management, so it is best used for testing a new subscription rather than as your everyday player.
How do I set up IPTV in Kodi?
Enable the PVR IPTV Simple Client under Add-ons, set the location to Remote Path, paste your M3U URL, add your EPG URL under the EPG tab, then restart Kodi. A TV section then appears with your channels and guide.
How do I get IPTV from my laptop onto the TV?
An HDMI cable gives the best quality with no re-encoding. Casting a Chrome tab to a Chromecast is more convenient but reduces quality and adds latency. DLNA and AirPlay work from some players with mixed reliability.
Why does a channel work on my computer but not my TV?
That points to the device or the app rather than the subscription. Check the credentials for typos on the TV, confirm the app supports the stream format, and verify the TV is on 5GHz Wi-Fi or ethernet rather than 2.4GHz.
